Travel Rights: Places I long to visit

2011/05/18

airplane! the movie

Last week, over three consecutive days, there were three separate instances  of an unrulely passenger causing a disturbance on a domestic US flight.

Now as you may know, in America, it is every person’s inalienable right to go nuts and lose his/her mind— even on an airplane.  It is also every person’s right to be kicked in the neck and subdued by fellow passengers before being dragged off to jail (or the loony bin) after going nuts on a plane.

Initially, these in-flight shenanigans had me relieved that I haven’t been flying lately. But a further gut check revealed that I am not willing to give up my right to travel out of fear that a fellow passenger will exercise their right to go coo coo for cocoa puffs in mid-air.

So as a sort of mid year resolution, I am re-committing to my top 3 travel things to do by my birthday, the end of the year, soon!

Sleep in French Castle:

I always imagined that I’d feel like Marie Antoinette, as  a foreigner in a beautiful french castle filled with fine brocade and trompe l’oeil while lying on a Louis XV Chaise and eating Éclairs.

This is a dream that can definitely be lived out at Château de la Bourdaisièr, a 17 room and 3 apartment castle located in Loire Valley.  Only an hour from Paris by the TGV train, this fortress  was erected in the early 1400’s by the first French Felt Marchal to defend against English invasions as an overlook to the Cher & Loire rivers.

Possessing 80 acres of historic gardens, this french castle also served as the location of the 2003 season of American reality tv series Joe Millionaire.  Château de la Bourdaisièr offers cooking classes in the garden, wine from it’s very own vineyard and art exhibits the in-house gallery. Rates start at 150 Euros per night.

Swarovski Crystal Musuem in Wattens, Austria

I am sort of a shiny girl. I love all things sparkly and am often unable to focus on anything else if there happens to be anything the least bit blingy nearby. Swarovski crystals are a natural obsession for me. Over the past 100 years, the folks there have become masters at creating the most faceted and  light catching crystals in the world.

Located in Watten, Austria a 15-minute drive from Innsbruck,  Swarovski’s  Crystal World consists of 14 interconnecting  “Wunderkammern” or caves of marvel.  The exhibits feature the world’s largest crystal –the Centenar — weighing 300,000 carats, a water feature at the front entrance that will put you in the mind of an outer worldly Sphinx and a geodesic Crystal Dome which has beams of refracted light bouncing  into 590 facets all around you.

There’s also the  mechanical  Crystal Theater, Crystal Planet, Crystal Meditation, and the Crystal Calligraphy  rooms, along with the Ice Lane, a cafe and a gift shop featuring items that you won’t find anywhere else.    www.swarovski.com

Tango in Buenos Aires:

Ah, the Tango! The Passion. The Drama. The Sensuality. The slinky red dress! Ok, so I have a long way to go before I can confidently wrap my legs around some steamy dark-eyed tango dancer on the streets of Buenos Aires. I will definitely need some help.

Becka Tango Tours offers a fantastic 9-day tour in Buenos Aires, which includes tango lessons, sightseeing, fine dining and nightly accommodations in the lovely Old World style Becka Tango House Hotel.

Becka Tango House

Each day Becka Tango provides breakfast and tango lesson along with an array of  shopping and cultural opportunities.  Participants are guided through Iguazu Falls, —the Tuscany of Argentina, the lakes of Bariloch, and Recoleta where Evita Peron is buried, as well as, city squares featuring open air tango shows.

Most evenings are spent at the milanga or tango clubs, where you’ll get the chance to wear your sexiest tango outfit and put your newly learned tango skills to the test.

The 9-day tour really allows guests to build their confidence and experience tango in a variety of romantic Argentinian settings.

Rates start at $2100 US for double occupancy and though the tour generally only happens 3 times a year, a special tour can be booked for groups of 6 or more.

Maksim Chmerkovskiy

The only thing that could make this tango tour more exciting would be inclusion of my favorite Dancing with the Stars dancer, the smokin’ hot Maksim Chmerkovskiy.

Thats a nice list! I also have “dream” of living like Marie Antoinette for a day…or two. I didn’t know about the Crystal Museum in Austria, looks super interesting and shiny.
