Tuesday Tunes : The Incomparable Susana Baca

There’s so much to say about Peruvian singer Susana Baca. With a career that spans more than four decades she is easily the crown jewel of the Peruvian sound. Her music uses indigenous instruments mixed with modern elements found in the rhythms of Cuba and Brazil.

Baca, who did not release her first album until she was in her 40’s and did not achieve commercial and critical acclaim until after 50, is a testament to resilience and perseverance as a woman and an artist.  Singing about love, heartbreak, the plight of women and the working class her songs are as powerful in poetry as Baca herself is in flawless talent and grace.

This beautifully poignant song “Maria Lando” is about a woman whose circumstances are so dire that she is forced to work constantly to support her family until that work takes over her life, never allowing her to lift up her head to the dawn and truly live. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Tell me what you think.
