The Many Murals of Pilsen

2013/11/20

PILSEN-7

I recently had the opportunity to take part in a walking tour of the Chicago neighborhood known as Pilsen under the fantastic guidance of  Joyce from Joyce Walks Chicago. Named for the Bohemian city of Plzeň in the Czech Republic by the immigrants who began settling in the 1840’s, Pilsen is now considered to be the heart of Chicago’s Mexican-American community.

Inspired by the Mexican Muralist Movement of the 1930’s when artists like Diego Rivera, Jose Orozco, and David Siquieros used murals to communicate social distresses for unfair worker conditions, poverty and other injustice within their communities.

Many of the murals of Pilsen were painted by professional artist coalitions and community youth who partnered with building owners to express their concerns and hopes for their lives, their futures and their neighborhood.
